The “Sage Twist” half-body stretch is a yoga movement that helps improve spinal flexibility and open up the side muscles of the body. This twisting movement, in addition to increasing flexibility, also helps to calm the mind and improve breathing. “Sage Twist” is often performed at the end of yoga sessions to release the body from the tension and fatigue caused by strenuous exercises.

This movement is particularly beneficial for strengthening the spine and reducing pressure on the lower back and shoulders. Furthermore, body twists improve blood circulation in various parts of the body and distribute energy well throughout the body. By performing this movement, a sense of calm and focus is improved, and the balance of mind and body is strengthened.

Target Muscle in Half-Body Stretch

The primary target muscles in the “Sage Twist” movement are the muscles of the spine and the back of the body. This twisting movement stretches the deep back muscles and also strengthens the longitudinal muscles of the spine. The body twist in this movement helps to stretch the vertebrae of the spine and increase their flexibility.

In addition to the back muscles, other muscles such as the abdominal muscles, obliques, and chest muscles are also involved. The oblique abdominal muscles and the lateral abdominal muscles play a role in performing the body twist and contribute to improving the overall strength and endurance of the body.

Side Muscles Involved in Half-Body Stretch

Along with the primary target muscles, other muscles such as the abdominal muscles, sides, and chest muscles are also affected by the “Sage Twist” movement. The oblique abdominal muscles and the lateral abdominal muscles help in performing the body twist and create more strength in the core area.

Additionally, the shoulder and neck muscles indirectly participate in this movement. Stretching these muscles helps reduce tension from prolonged sitting or daily activities and improves posture and shoulder endurance.

How to Perform the Half-Body Stretch

To perform the “Sage Twist” movement, first sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Keep your spine completely straight and pull your shoulders back. Then, place your right hand on the floor behind your body and place your left hand on your right knee.

Inhale slowly and exhale, twisting your body to the right. In this position, turn your head and neck towards your right shoulder and breathe gently. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds, then return to the starting position. Repeat this movement for the other side of the body.
